The world's first movie studio was built right here in West Orange by Thomas Edison in the late 1800s. For many years, however, film production largely moved west to Hollywood and other states that offered better incentives.
Fast forward to today… thanks to new tax incentives, growing studio infrastructure, and the incredible variety of locations New Jersey offers, our state is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after filming destinations on the East Coast. Production companies are taking notice of the remarkable range of settings New Jersey provides. From small towns and bustling cities to quiet farmland, beautiful beaches, and even mountains, the Garden State truly has it all.
Major studios are investing in New Jersey in a big way. Netflix is building a massive studio complex at the former Fort Monmouth Army base, scheduled to open in 2028. 1888 Studios in Bayonne broke ground in December, and Lionsgate Studios in Newark is scheduled to open in the spring of 2027.
With the opening of these new studio complexes, New Jersey is likely to see even more productions choosing the Garden State. As the industry continues to grow, it brings new energy, jobs, and opportunities to local communities. As more people come to work on these productions, the need for housing and services naturally grows as well, creating positive benefits for both local neighborhoods and the real estate market.
Lights, camera…New Jersey is ready for its close-up once again.
